A logo is a symbol, name or trademark used by entities to imbue the image of the brand.
While it's obviously not the entire view of a brand/company, a logo sets the tone and leaves the first impression on one's potential clientiele and audience. It's important to make a logo as uncomplicated, but memorable as possible.
